Watermelons, Cucurbita, Histamines, & Migraines

The first thing to understand about watermelon is that it is both a fruit and a vegetable. Not only does it have seeds but it also is harvested from the field. It is part of the Cucurbitaceae family that includes cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. The reason this is important for migraine sufferors is that if you have intolerances to one or more members of this particular plant family, you are more than likely to have intolerances to many or all members of the Cucurbitaceae group.

Research finds dairy, red meat, and alcohol increase cancer risk

Cancer image

Your risk for cancer increases based on what you consume

For a long time I have been saying that, to the extent you suffer from migraines, dairy products should be avoided at all costs. Well, on June 9th, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non-profit health organization, released research showing that certain foods and drinks, including dairy, increase cancer risks markedly.

California State Senate rejects GMO labeling again

Stop GMO

Is it a surprise to anyone that this bill failed, when you have the likes of Monsanto and Dow Chemical buying the votes of politicians for sometimes as little as just a steak dinner? It is completely outrageous that Californians are not able to know whether or not food contains GMOs by looking at a label on the product. But of course, anyone who knows anything about the prevalence of GMOs in our food supply is aware that GMOs are found in 95% or more of everything that we consume. Why then are organizations and companies fighting so hard to not label GMOs? What harm could come from consumers simply knowing what we are consuming? And, what should we do about it?

GMO producers to be punished as terrorists

Russian lawmakers have introduced draft legislation that would seek to punish GMO producers in the same way that terrorists are punished. The proposed law would provide for disciplinary action against individuals and firms, which produce or distribute harmful biotech products and government officials who fail to properly control them (1).

Do you suffer from migraines? You may have leaky gut

Stomach pain with gasWhenever I hear the term “leaky gut”, it makes me cringe. After all, who wants their guts leaking out? The vast majority of migraineurs are not aware of the close link between their stomachs and migraine episodes. Most migraines, in my opinion, develop as a result of what goes on in our digestive system. If you have an unhealthy digestive system, you are likely to suffer from a variety of ailments, not the least of which is repeated migraine attacks. Therefore it is important to understand whether a “leaky gut” could be the cause of migraines in your case.

Migraine Trigger Close-up: Watermelon

Watermelon is wonderful this time of year – sweet, juicy, and crunchy. If you can get watermelon that is cold, it is even better. Consuming watermelon is also great from a health standpoint. The vegetable contains lycopene which is said to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Unfortunately, migraine sufferers will likely experience increased migraine episodes, the riper the watermelon is.

After a certain period of time, sugars are broken down into alcohol and CO2. This process of decay also produces tyramine, a migraine sufferer’s worst nightmare. Several health websites, including those of some prominent Universities, state that watermelon is safe to eat for those of us with migraines. This is only true under certain conditions as the watermelon cannot be too ripe or unripe – it has to be perfect.

Wall Street Journal “Hunt for a Migraines Cure”

On August 7, 2012, Shirley Wang wrote in the Wall Street Journal about recent advancements in the research for a migraine cure. In particular, she wrote that researchers have isolated a brain chemical, known as calcitonin gene-related peptide transmitter (“CGRP”) to be responsible for the transmission of migraine pain. She further wrote that researchers are in the process of coming up with medicines that would block CGRP from forming and thus prohibit any migraine pain from occurring. Several doctors were quoted in the article and one of the so-called experts stated that there was an immediate need to develop drugs that would stop any pain from being felt by migraine sufferers.

First, let us assume that researchers were able to come up with a medicine that blocked the formation of CGRP and thus blocked the headache pain associated with a migraine. What then? We would still be nowhere closer to finding the cause of migraines. Instead, we would be continuing the flawed approach of prescribing medicines to cure the effects of migraines and not the real causes behind them.

The National Headache Foundation’s “Low Tyramine Headache Diet”

Low Tyramine Diet

The National Headache Foundation has posted a low tyramine diet on their website. It helps migraine sufferers identify and avoid diets containing large amounts of tyramine. In other parts of my blog I have discussed some of these low tyramine diets- I am not going to delve into each one. However, I will leave a link to the list so that each one of you can use this information. This list is a good starting point to identify certain foods with high tyramine content. Try a diet with lower tyramine in order to lessen migraines.

Use exercise to avoid/abort a migraine headache

Potato Lifting Weights

If you have followed my previous articles, you know that I am a big fan of exercising in general. Furthermore, you also know that

I believe exercise can be the best way to abort an oncoming migraine episode.

Over the years numerous studies have been written that highlighted the link between regular exercise and a decrease in migraine episodes. However, there are also those who suggest that physical exercise can cause migraine headaches. I cannot speak for anyone else but in my case, exercise helps relieve migraine headaches that have already started and aborts migraine headaches that are about to start.Excersising

When you exercise, the body releases endorphins, a chemical that exists in the nervous system and in other parts of the body. These chemicals are also known as neurotransmitters and they help reduce our perception of pain in our bodies. A large amount of migraine drugs attempt to stimulate the release of endorphins. Keep in mind that if you choose to use migraine drugs, you will likely have to endure side effects that could be equally debilitating.
