I get it - taking an internet survey is not high on the priority-list for most of us. But, if any of the articles on this site have been helpful, please take a minute to participate. It is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Your risk for cancer increases based on what you consume
For a long time I have been saying that, to the extent you suffer from migraines, dairy products should be avoided at all costs. Well, on June 9th, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non-profit health organization, released research showing that certain foods and drinks, including dairy, increase cancer risks markedly.
Is it a surprise to anyone that this bill failed, when you have the likes of Monsanto and Dow Chemical buying the votes of politicians for sometimes as little as just a steak dinner? It is completely outrageous that Californians are not able to know whether or not food contains GMOs by looking at a label on the product. But of course, anyone who knows anything about the prevalence of GMOs in our food supply is aware that GMOs are found in 95% or more of everything that we consume. Why then are organizations and companies fighting so hard to not label GMOs? What harm could come from consumers simply knowing what we are consuming? And, what should we do about it?
Russian lawmakers have introduced draft legislation that would seek to punish GMO producers in the same way that terrorists are punished. The proposed law would provide for disciplinary action against individuals and firms, which produce or distribute harmful biotech products and government officials who fail to properly control them (1).
On August 7, 2012, Shirley Wang wrote in the Wall Street Journal about recent advancements in the research for a migraine cure. In particular, she wrote that researchers have isolated a brain chemical, known as calcitonin gene-related peptide transmitter (“CGRP”) to be responsible for the transmission of migraine pain. She further wrote that researchers are in the process of coming up with medicines that would block CGRP from forming and thus prohibit any migraine pain from occurring. Several doctors were quoted in the article and one of the so-called experts stated that there was an immediate need to develop drugs that would stop any pain from being felt by migraine sufferers.
Doctors and Patients differ on how they view their meetings
A recent survey found that doctors and patients recalled their migraine visits very differently. The survey indicated that a high percentage of doctors (Above 70%) discussed the timing of migraine medication intake, specific migraine triggers, and other potential migraine cures, while only an average of 19% of patients could recall those conversations. In other words, doctors think that they adequately cover the topics that they feel are important for migraine sufferers. Patients, on the other hand, do not believe that doctors sufficiently cover the topics they feel are important to them. The survey, conducted by Harris1, asked 1,218 diagnosed migraine patients and 533 physicians who routinely treat five to ten migraine sufferers per week.
Researchers in France conducted a cognitive study on whether migraine sufferers were more likely than non-migraine sufferers to have brain damage later on in life. The researchers found that there was nothing to suggest that those suffering from migraines were more likely to suffer brain damage (1).
